How to Do This Correctly (Don't Screw It Up)
Balance transfer cards are powerful tools, but they have sharp edges. If you misuse them, you'll end up in deeper debt. Here is the playbook.
The 3 Golden Rules
- 1. Stop using the card: Do not use a balance transfer card for new purchases. Put the card in a drawer.
- 2. Set Autopay: If you miss a single payment, the bank can revoke your 0% promo APR. Set up autopay for at least the minimum.
- 3. Beat the Clock: Divide your debt by the number of months (e.g., $5,000 / 21 months = $238/mo). Treat that number as your strict monthly bill.
