The 30-Second Summary

The Safe List
These cards report to all 3 bureaus and don't charge predatory "program fees."
How Secured Cards Actually Work
Think of a secured card like credit card training wheels. You give the bank a deposit (say, $200). They hold onto that money in case you disappear. In exchange, they give you a credit card with a $200 limit.
You use it for small purchases (Netflix, gum, gas) and pay it off every month. The bank tells the credit bureaus, "Hey, this person is responsible!" After 6-12 months, they usually upgrade you to a regular card and send your deposit back.
๐จ The "Scam Card" Blacklist
If you have bad credit, you are a target. Avoid these cards at all costs. They charge "monthly maintenance fees," "program fees," and "processing fees" that can total $150+ per year for a tiny $300 limit.
- Credit One Bank (Do not confuse with Capital One!)
- Indigo Platinum Mastercard
- Total Visa Card
- First Premier Bank
The Timeline to Fix Your Credit
Months 0-6
Get a Secured Card. Put one small charge on it per month (like Spotify). Set up auto-pay. Do not touch it otherwise.
Months 6-12
If you paid on time, the bank will "graduate" you. They refund your deposit and increase your limit.
Months 12+
Welcome back. You can now apply for regular cards like the Chase Freedom Flex. You have exited the penalty box.
Don't pay for credit repair
You can fix this yourself for free. Start with a secured card today.
